Biography
British soprano Camilla Harris is fast establishing herself as an exciting interpreter of Classical and twentieth-century repertoire, with recent appearances at Garsington Opera, the BBC Proms, Opera North and Glyndebourne, where her Musetta was described by The Guardian as “assured, feisty and ever-so chic”, while The Telegraph praised her for filling “the auditorium with her voice and charisma”.
Recent operatic highlights include appearances at Glyndebourne as Musetta in La bohème and Flower Maiden in Wagner’s Parsifal, alongside Arminda in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera in concert with The Mozartists, Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Helena in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Garsington Opera, the latter reprised at the BBC Proms, and Helena for Opera North. She has also appeared as the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro for Hampstead Garden Opera, for which she received an OFFIE nomination. Earlier roles include Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and La Comtesse in Massenet’s Chérubin for Royal Academy Opera, and Suzanne in Offenbach’s Robinson Crusoe at the Royal College of Music. She has covered Countess in Le nozze di Figaro, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and Musetta in La bohème at Glyndebourne, and Aspasia in Mozart’s Mitridate for Garsington Opera.
On the concert platform, Harris has appeared with leading orchestras and ensembles including the Philharmonia Orchestra with Long Yu in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasia, the London Symphony Orchestra with Simon Halsey in Stravinsky’s Mass, the London Handel Orchestra with Adrian Butterfield in Esther, and The English Concert with Harry Bicket in Dido and Aeneas. She has also performed extensively as both soloist and chorus member with ensembles such as the Monteverdi Choir, The Sixteen and the Gabrieli Consort.
A committed recitalist, she performs regularly with pianist Natalie Burch, with appearances at the Oxford Lieder, St Endellion and Devon Song Festivals. Together they recorded Songs of Love and Longing, a programme of Liszt, Rachmaninov and Grieg, for Linn Records.
Harris studied at the Royal Academy Opera with Raymond Connell and Jonathan Papp, graduating with the Regency Award for distinguished studentship. Her prizes include the Tom Hammond Opera Prize, the Kendall Prize and the John McAslan Prize, and she was a Bicentenary Scholar. She is a Britten Pears Young Artist and a member of the Royal Academy of Music Song Circle. Her studies were supported by the Josephine Baker Trust and the Countess of Munster Musical Trust as a Derek Butler Award holder. She also holds a Master of Performance with distinction from the Royal College of Music and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Durham University. She began her musical life as a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral, where she now serves as a trustee of the Salisbury Cathedral Girl Choristers’ Association.
